Description: Textured whimsical abstract flower bud in white Carrara ordinario marble.
Artist Intention:
The sense of touch can sometimes supersede the information gained by sight. When vision fails, especially under unfavourable lighting, the sense of touch can enlighten, inform, and guide. In the absence of contrast and shadows in white marble, a “snow blindness” like phenomenon occurs which deceives the eyes while sculpting. To truly understand the needs of the stone’s surface, I close my eyes and gently pass my fingers across the surface, feeling for every inconsistency which requires my attention. Over and over, I repeat this process until my finger pads convince me to move on.
In this piece I created a spatial form which invites the hand into the sculpture. The vast interior consists of an alluring mixture of light, tones, and slight apprehension. On the surface, each delicate petal has intricately carved fingerprint-like impressions.
I left my mark on this stone, and if you hold this sculpture, the petals will leave a mark on you.
