SHOP TALK with JT Winik

“Art making is intuitive and interactive. Bits and pieces attract each other like magnets and, in the end, the marriage of these elements opens a world that is familiar.”

Studio22: A Little Bit of Everything

While there is good representation of work by local artists, Studio 22 also exhibits the work of artists from across Canada, which provides for a deal of diversity in the collection. Indeed, there is a little bit of everything at Studio 22, with work in most media and genres (though not craft), including sculptural work in metal as well as in marble, which one doesn’t often see in local commercial galleries. There is an array of subject matter, from landscapes and figural work to fanciful, abstract and non-representational art — and more, so much more.

Enigma Variations – JT Winik

Thematically, Winik’s new paintings are composed of two main series; Girl(s) in a Corner and Female Circus Performers. The first series depicts young women in party dresses, sitting alone in corners, confronting the viewer face on. The simplicity of the theme allows the artist’s process to focus solely on interacting with mark-making until a figure forms, each with its own personality and attitude. Sometimes these girls appear a bit broken, other times they challenge the viewer, but mostly there’s a bit of both. It is that merging of conflicting senses that keeps the audience intrigued – with strength and vulnerability co-habiting as they so often do in real life.

10 New Paintings ~ Susan Oomen

A selection of new oil paintings on the general theme of water – boathouses, canoes and Susan’s newest series of night scenes of light on water. Susan’s work never fails to bring a sense of calm and pause to the viewer.  They are truly lovely pieces to live with.

Woodrow & Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity

As the story of ‘Woodrow At Sea’ compels the contemplation of the meaning of friendship, generosity and the importance of supporting those around us enduring hardships, perhaps one of the most special features of the exhibit is the love and compassion the artist exudes for animals, both real and fantastical, and his commitment to animal welfare and advocacy

HAUNTED GRAFFITI – New paintings by Lee Stewart

Rarely do such varied subjects come together in a studied and cohesive body of work, and yet Stewart manages to lend his signature ability to consume and distill disparate cultural forms, from classic films and art history to folklore and pop culture, and to imbue them with something akin to reverence.

COLOUR BLAST – Erika Olson

Erika Olson’s new solo exhibition features a return to the large colourful abstracts which marked the early days of her painting career.

REMNANTS – Debra Krakow

Krakow’s work reminds us that our subjective viewpoints necessarily reflect experience filtered through time and that which we most accurately perceive often demands focused attention and thoughtful exploration.

LOST PORTRAITS – New Works by Keight MacLean

LOST PORTRAITS, her latest body of work, features MacLean’s traditionally inspired portraits, presented with a contemporary twist, such as fluorescent spray paint, re-harvested artists’ mediums and destructive techniques.
