CAN YOU GIFT A LOVE OF ART?

The act of giving is engrained in many cultures – ritualized for a myriad of purposes – as rite, as reward, as gratitude.  A gift is many things.  It is not always of a physical nature, and a physical offering is not always the real gift. A pair of track shoes to the aspiring runner is a gift of opportunity.  A book to a child is a gift of an expanded mind.

It is natural that we like to share the things we value.  In a world of ever expanding stuff, it is more important than ever that we find value in the things we choose to share.  We at Studio22 hold dear the idea that art is a gift. It elevates our state of mind and gives texture and colour to our imaginations.  In the words of Ezra Pound,

Beauty in art reminds one what is worth while, I am not now speaking of shams.  I mean beauty, not slither, not sentimentalizing about beauty, not telling people that beauty is the proper and respectable thing.  I mean beauty.  You don’t argue about an April wind, you feel bucked up when you meet it.  You feel bucked up when you come across a swift moving thought in Plato or on a fine line in a statue.

In acknowledgement of the gift-giving season, Studio22 is proud to present FUEL FOR HIBERNATION– an exhibit of art, all under $500, that ignites our thoughts to help us while away the dark hours of winter.  We invite you to share your love of art with those you love. Consider gifting a love of art.  We all deserve to feel bucked up.

***As well as this exhibit of art under $500, the gallery offers customized gift certificates – purchasable directly from our online store.

  • 2018 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection

2018 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection

    Opening Saturday, October 20th

Joining 27 galleries in North America, Studio22 brings the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection to art lovers with a special interest in graphics & contemporary art from Nunavut. 11 Inuit artists, 34 prints and a whole lot of buzz worldwide!

For many people, Nunavut is an intriguing part of Canada. How do people exist in isolation and freezing temperatures? Who are the first peoples of this land? Are they witnessing climate change? Why are their artists so gifted in talent?

There is a thriving studio in the tiny hamlet of Cape Dorset on Baffin Island. Many Inuit artists in this print co-operative called Kinngait (high mountain) have been celebrated in galleries around the world and travelled to receive accolades and to collaborate with other artists. They choose to return home to make their art, raise their families in a hunting culture, speak Inuktitut, and live in a place many Canadians would think of as barren. Their community is anything but barren, and the prints that southern patrons collect eagerly are proof that it is a colourful, humorous and provocative place….and its not so cold if you dress right and have a cosy studio to work with your peers in.

The annual collection is in it’s 59th year and the art is wildly different from the naive traditional images that were first sent south. Come in to see contemporary work by savvy artists. Gain a little understanding at this time of reconciliation.

Studio22 teams up with Ellen Fraser, host of online print gallery Print Inuit, for this exhibit.

Enigma Variations: or “The Beauty of Awkwardness”. JT Winik at Studio22

Since my last visit to Studio22 a lot has happened, with the completion of the renovations alluded to in our article of fall 2016. Uniting the upper and lower floors, the staircase is now approached via a newly created elegant archway, which in turn is accessed from the sole ground floor entrance…

  • Enigma Variations – JT Winik

    Enigma Variations – JT Winik

Studio22 Open Gallery proudly presents Enigma Variations, a new solo exhibit by internationally renowned artist, J.T. Winik. The title, Enigma Variations, refers both to the enigmatic narratives of these new works as well as to the process of creating them.  Featuring spectacular new large works on canvas (30×40) as well as a collection of smaller pieces, previews and pre-sales will take place September 11 – September 14, with the show officially open to the general public September 15 – October 20. On September 27th at 5 pm, J.T. Winik will give an artist talk at the gallery focusing on her inspiration for this latest exhibit.

Thematically, Winik’s new paintings are composed of two main series; Girl(s) in a Corner and Female Circus Performers. The first series depicts young women in party dresses, sitting alone in corners, confronting the viewer face on. The simplicity of the theme allows the artist’s process to focus solely on interacting with mark-making until a figure forms, each with its own personality and attitude. Sometimes these girls appear a bit broken, other times they challenge the viewer, but mostly there’s a bit of both. It is that merging of conflicting senses that keeps the audience intrigued – with strength and vulnerability co-habiting as they so often do in real life.

The second series depicting female circus performers was inspired by the family history of the artist’s dear friend, who recently discovered he’d descended from generations of famous British clowns and Vaudeville actors. One of these, a great aunt, named Lulu Adams, was known to be the first female clown in Britain. And so, with this revelation, the Lulu Series unfolded.

“As circuses and vaudeville acts comprised a major entertainment industry of its time, I wondered had it not its share of “me too” girls- and although I could find no tales of abuse, it’s as likely then as now that disadvantaged young women were easy targets, whatever their field of employment. What was apparent, however, was that within the circus and vaudeville industries there was a strong sense of community which offered a comparatively lucrative living to those women who did work regularly. Some, with a measure of fame, came to own the rights to their acts and developed as entrepreneurs, employing others. As always, there are surely as many facets to a story as there are those who tell it, but great Aunt Lulu was one who seemed more than satisfied with her lot in life.”– J.T. Winik

    & Friends

As part of the exhibit Woodrow & Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity, Wallace Edwards has created a collection of 19 animal studies in support of Sandy Pines Animal Wildlife Centre.

As the story of Woodrow At Sea compels the contemplation of the meaning of friendship, generosity and the importance of supporting those around us enduring hardships, perhaps one of the most special features of the exhibit is the love and compassion the artist exudes for animals, both real and fantastical, and his commitment to animal welfare and advocacy. As is evident in the artwork he creates for the Metro Toronto Zoo, the B.C. Ministry of the Environment and the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Edwards is dedicated to using his artistic powers and influence to help animals in need.

Sharing in the same spirit of generosity, Edwards and Studio 22 will be donating a significant portion of all watercolour and pencil animal studies exhibit sales to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee who suffered a devastating loss earlier this year when their nearly 25-year old barn, used to house rescued farm animals, was destroyed in a fire. Monies raised will assist Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre with reconstruction efforts and expenses.

Woodrow & Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity

    Opening June 19th, 2018

This unique exhibit of works by award-winning author-illustrator Wallace Edwards will feature a vast selection of preliminary pencils and paintings on paper, which served as the inspiration for his most recent beautifully illustrated wordless picture book Woodrow At Sea. Other artwork on display during the show will include a spectacular collection of watercolour and pencil animal studies by the artist.

Edwards’ illustrations do more than visually captivate the readers; through the vibrant expression of emotions, the artist’s illustrations succeed in capturing the raw humanity and true essence of his characters. The exhibit presents fans, supporters and art aficionados alike the rare opportunity to not only explore the evolution of the artist’s fantastical original book concept of exploration, discovery and conflict, but also own an Edwards original work at a very accessible price.

“Woodrow At Sea was inspired by a large body of drawings of a little elephant in a boat. The drawings came in an unbidden burst of creative energy and seemed to lead one to the other. The original idea for the book was a journey of a lone hero in the vast unknown. I am very pleased with the final published result but also with the opportunity to show the preliminary concept drawings and give a glimpse at the unseen part of the process in the making of this book.” – Wallace Edwards

Monies raised will assist Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre with reconstruction efforts and expenses.

Edwards is an award-winning author-illustrator who has captured, transformed and inspired the imagination of both children and adults alike. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, his paintings and illustrations are found in public and private collections, books, magazines and on public display in Canada and the United States. Edwards won the 2002 Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature Illustration for his first children’s picture book, Alphabeasts. His third book, Mixed Beasts was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and won the Amelia Frances Howard- Gibbon Award. He currently resides in Yarker, Ontario.

Woodrow and Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity is on exhibit at Studio 22 from Tuesday, June 19 until Saturday, July 14th, 2018.

HAUNTED GRAFFITI – New paintings by Lee Stewart

    A HAUNTING REFLECTION IN PAINT

Studio22 Open Gallery is delighted to present HAUNTED GRAFFITI, a collection of new work by Kingston-based artist Lee Stewart.

Large canvases set the scene for this collection of provocative narrative paintings from emerging artist Lee Stewart, demonstrating his cinematic approach to composition, both in content and form. Rarely do such varied subjects come together in a studied and cohesive body of work, and yet Stewart manages to lend his signature ability to consume and distill disparate cultural forms, from classic films and art history to folklore and pop culture, and to imbue them with something akin to reverence.

In isolating his subjects, Stewart presses pause on his active mind and concentrates his auto-didactic artistic skills on executing paintings with minute detail and significant impact. In one of his large scale works, for example, Stewart depicts two deer, captured in a moment of stillness and vulnerability. His attention to minutiae is beautifully on display here, as the viewer begins to notice thumbnail size details emerge. The impact of the work is clear: like a camera zoom, it is a long and slow reveal. It commands the viewers attention and asks that we take the time to contemplate how moments in life reveal themselves to be far more than we initially apprehend, when we allow ourselves to be drawn in.

In another variation on this theme, an intimate portrait of Michael Jordan crying, Stewart references popular culture, employing this snapshot of celebrity in the service of exploring a deeper reality. Here Stewart’s keen awareness of human emotion is on display; calling into question the reduction of a human life to a single moment in time which betrays the truth of their complex nature.

The bright, often fluorescent, colour palettes of Stewart’s work suggest a manner of playfulness, which he juxtaposes with the more serious themes he explores. He is discerning, yet refreshingly able to avoid the trap of hierarchical thinking. Almost nothing escapes his gaze and consideration. A self-portrait by the artist, entitled Auto-Retrato is an amalgamation of Stewart’s own countenance in the form of Diego Valázquez, a painter from the Golden Age of Spanish painting; an auspicious synthesis which suggests a prosperous career for this young, but impressive artist.
