    POP-UP Exhibit – CELEBRITY MUGSHOTS

New works from Bernard Clark’s ongoing Notorious Series

Bernard Clark likes working in series.  Known for his Tattoo Portrait series, he has also explored numerous other sets of work.  At Studio22, we have seen Musician and Artist Portraits, Hotel signs, Pop Art signs and Camera series.

His newest effort, Celebrity Mugshots, is part of Clark’s ongoing Notorious Series which began with tiny mugshots of gangsters he had been contemplating using for some time.  Working with copywrite-free images – such as mugshots, driver’s licenses and military ID’s, Clark uses his own photographs of keyboard keys, scrabble tiles, dice and other such small pieces to work with an algorithm to recompose his subjects.  He digitally blows the images up and reconstructs them using tiny pieces creating new portraits that are strikingly realistic from a distance and pixilated and less recognizable close up.

This new Pop-Up exhibit is composed of 8 brand new portraits combined with 8 created and shown at the gallery over the past year.  An interesting new facet to the celebrity mugshots is that of the FAKE mugshot.  Several in the grouping were staged for entertainment purposes.  Can you tell the real from the fake?  And why do so many celebrities have real mugshots?

All Clark’s images are Limited Edition Fine Art prints.

Signs & Symbols of the Imperceptible

A Selection of Paintings by Ingeborg Mohr

Opens March 12th and runs to April 13th

Previews and pre-sale will take place March 12th to March 15th

To celebrate the launch of its 2019 season, Studio22 Open Gallery is delighted to offer the Kingston community a unique opportunity to discover and explore artwork from the late Ingeborg Mohr with a new solo exhibit that will run from March 12th to April 13th. .

As this will be the first exhibit for Studio22 that examines the work of a deceased artist, the exhibition entitled Signs and Symbols of the Imperceptible will feature a selection of paintings from Mohr’s vast personal collection of unsold work. For those unfamiliar with Mohr’s work, this show will serve to introduce the South Eastern Ontario community to a new artist, perspective and hopefully source of great pleasure over the coming years as Studio22 continues to build and grow its relationship with the Mohr family as well as continues its exploration into this prolific artist’s expansive body of work.

Ingeborg Mohr began her artistic career producing watercolour paintings inspired by the landscapes of her childhood in Austria as well as day to day life when she moved with her husband and three children to Saskatchewan. It wasn’t until she moved to Toronto in 1955 and encountered the work of the Painters Eleven that she began exploring the variable physical characteristics of paint and colour as a means to convey pure emotion over profound meaning.

As can be seen throughout the selection of work in Signs and Symbols of the Imperceptible, Mohr did not approach her craft to create meaning for the viewer. Instead, through the purposeful use of layering and colour, the artist was on a quest to discover the essence of her own existence and, more importantly, uncover truths about the human condition.

When asked about the meaning I had intended to express in a certain painting I have to give the often disappointing answer that no meaning had been intended and no outcome had been foreseen before or while working. What I do hope for, however, is that the final result- the new object that has come into being- will exceed me in depth and reach. – Ingeborg Mohr, Notes on Painting, March 2000

It is only when standing directly in front of one of Mohr’s pieces that one can truly appreciate the beauty of the unanswered questions, embedded in the layers of paint and left behind for us, her audience, to dissect and absorb. The viewer is drawn into the canvas with curiosity, enraptured by the complex composition of the artwork and fundamentally moved by the personal revelations of the artist. Signs and Symbols of the Imperceptible, is an exhibit full of promise, longing and mystery about one woman’s quest for self exploration that ultimately crosses the boundaries of time and space.

    MORE

Ingeborg Mohr was born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1921. Over the course of her notable career that spanned four decades, she produced hundreds of paintings that now hang in private and public collections in Europe, Canada and the United States. She was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1975 and to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1980. In 1981, Mohr moved to Howe Island with her husband and the couple converted an old barn into an impressive home, studio, and gallery space. Mohr held several successful exhibitions of her work in the space, while continuing to show at other galleries, such as the Edward Day Gallery in Kingston before it closed and was re-opened in Toronto in 2003. Ingeborg Mohr passed away in 2004.

  • Bones of the Earth

    Bones of the Earth

    Paintings by LW Foden

Opens March 12th ~ Runs to April 13th

    Previews and Pre-sale – March 12th to March 15th

LW Foden, Larry Foden – Foden to everyone who knows him – has a long association with the gallery owners.  A limited selection of his work has been show at Studio22 over the years – a few prints and one large, expansive canvas – giving us a nibble but not enough to sink our teeth into.  Now, after several years of plotting and planning, Stingio22 is finally in a position to bring an entire body of work from this BC artist to the gallery in Kingston, Ontario.  The West has come East.

Throughout his career, LW Foden has managed to capture the human element of some of Canada’s unique views — but you won’t find a single person in his work. Born in Belleville, Ontario and raised in Kapuskasing, Foden grew up surrounded by vast forest and waterways. He considers those views to be his first inspiration.

I see figures [in the earth]. I don’t necessarily exaggerate them or in any way set them apart but they are there.

Foden spent much of his life working and developing as an artist in Toronto. In 1994 Foden visited a friend on Galiano Island, British Columbia. What started as a six week vacation became a permanent home. He heard about a small cottage on the seaside overlooking the Georgia Strait and jumped on the opportunity. Still on the island today, his address has only changed once. He lived in that very cottage for over 20 years and now lives centrally in the small town on Galiano.

These are the building blocks of the world. I see it in a sort of archaeological kind of way. I guess that’s how I see it; these are the bones of the earth.

Foden’s current body of work is Galiano. Bones of the Earth is a collection of paintings from his years on the Island. This is where you’ll see his ability to anthropomorphize landscape.  The relationship between the rocks and the sea is captured from the vantage of his cottage on the shore. In the 20 years he spent with that view he watched the constant of the rocks and the change of the sea and imagined the lifetime they lived together before he came along.

Bones of the Earth can mean something as simple as the physical components that make up our landscape but it can — at times — be about the deeper story behind those components.

Sometimes I get caught up with mythology and stories and sometimes it’s just big rock in the water.

Foden’s work resonates with residents of Canada, even to those unfamiliar with the west coast.  It is our sky, our waters.  His work, now available for sale in Kingston, Ontario, gives buyers the opportunity to have a piece of the west coast here in the east.

L.W. Foden attended the Ontario College of Art in the early 60s and later studied at the Vancouver College of Art.  He was the lead costume designer in the University of Windsor’s Theatre Department for three years and was later the Props Master at Toronto’s Centre Stage Theatre for two years.  In the early 80’s, after many years of exploration in a myriad of art forms, he devoted himself to painting by establishing a studio in Toronto where he worked for over a decade before resettling on Galiano Island.

CAN YOU GIFT A LOVE OF ART?

The act of giving is engrained in many cultures – ritualized for a myriad of purposes – as rite, as reward, as gratitude.  A gift is many things.  It is not always of a physical nature, and a physical offering is not always the real gift. A pair of track shoes to the aspiring runner is a gift of opportunity.  A book to a child is a gift of an expanded mind.

It is natural that we like to share the things we value.  In a world of ever expanding stuff, it is more important than ever that we find value in the things we choose to share.  We at Studio22 hold dear the idea that art is a gift. It elevates our state of mind and gives texture and colour to our imaginations.  In the words of Ezra Pound,

Beauty in art reminds one what is worth while, I am not now speaking of shams.  I mean beauty, not slither, not sentimentalizing about beauty, not telling people that beauty is the proper and respectable thing.  I mean beauty.  You don’t argue about an April wind, you feel bucked up when you meet it.  You feel bucked up when you come across a swift moving thought in Plato or on a fine line in a statue.

In acknowledgement of the gift-giving season, Studio22 is proud to present FUEL FOR HIBERNATION– an exhibit of art, all under $500, that ignites our thoughts to help us while away the dark hours of winter.  We invite you to share your love of art with those you love. Consider gifting a love of art.  We all deserve to feel bucked up.

***As well as this exhibit of art under $500, the gallery offers customized gift certificates – purchasable directly from our online store.

  • 2018 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection

2018 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection

    Opening Saturday, October 20th

Joining 27 galleries in North America, Studio22 brings the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection to art lovers with a special interest in graphics & contemporary art from Nunavut. 11 Inuit artists, 34 prints and a whole lot of buzz worldwide!

For many people, Nunavut is an intriguing part of Canada. How do people exist in isolation and freezing temperatures? Who are the first peoples of this land? Are they witnessing climate change? Why are their artists so gifted in talent?

There is a thriving studio in the tiny hamlet of Cape Dorset on Baffin Island. Many Inuit artists in this print co-operative called Kinngait (high mountain) have been celebrated in galleries around the world and travelled to receive accolades and to collaborate with other artists. They choose to return home to make their art, raise their families in a hunting culture, speak Inuktitut, and live in a place many Canadians would think of as barren. Their community is anything but barren, and the prints that southern patrons collect eagerly are proof that it is a colourful, humorous and provocative place….and its not so cold if you dress right and have a cosy studio to work with your peers in.

The annual collection is in it’s 59th year and the art is wildly different from the naive traditional images that were first sent south. Come in to see contemporary work by savvy artists. Gain a little understanding at this time of reconciliation.

Studio22 teams up with Ellen Fraser, host of online print gallery Print Inuit, for this exhibit.

  • Enigma Variations – JT Winik

    Enigma Variations – JT Winik

Studio22 Open Gallery proudly presents Enigma Variations, a new solo exhibit by internationally renowned artist, J.T. Winik. The title, Enigma Variations, refers both to the enigmatic narratives of these new works as well as to the process of creating them.  Featuring spectacular new large works on canvas (30×40) as well as a collection of smaller pieces, previews and pre-sales will take place September 11 – September 14, with the show officially open to the general public September 15 – October 20. On September 27th at 5 pm, J.T. Winik will give an artist talk at the gallery focusing on her inspiration for this latest exhibit.

Thematically, Winik’s new paintings are composed of two main series; Girl(s) in a Corner and Female Circus Performers. The first series depicts young women in party dresses, sitting alone in corners, confronting the viewer face on. The simplicity of the theme allows the artist’s process to focus solely on interacting with mark-making until a figure forms, each with its own personality and attitude. Sometimes these girls appear a bit broken, other times they challenge the viewer, but mostly there’s a bit of both. It is that merging of conflicting senses that keeps the audience intrigued – with strength and vulnerability co-habiting as they so often do in real life.

The second series depicting female circus performers was inspired by the family history of the artist’s dear friend, who recently discovered he’d descended from generations of famous British clowns and Vaudeville actors. One of these, a great aunt, named Lulu Adams, was known to be the first female clown in Britain. And so, with this revelation, the Lulu Series unfolded.

“As circuses and vaudeville acts comprised a major entertainment industry of its time, I wondered had it not its share of “me too” girls- and although I could find no tales of abuse, it’s as likely then as now that disadvantaged young women were easy targets, whatever their field of employment. What was apparent, however, was that within the circus and vaudeville industries there was a strong sense of community which offered a comparatively lucrative living to those women who did work regularly. Some, with a measure of fame, came to own the rights to their acts and developed as entrepreneurs, employing others. As always, there are surely as many facets to a story as there are those who tell it, but great Aunt Lulu was one who seemed more than satisfied with her lot in life.”– J.T. Winik

    & Friends

As part of the exhibit Woodrow & Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity, Wallace Edwards has created a collection of 19 animal studies in support of Sandy Pines Animal Wildlife Centre.

As the story of Woodrow At Sea compels the contemplation of the meaning of friendship, generosity and the importance of supporting those around us enduring hardships, perhaps one of the most special features of the exhibit is the love and compassion the artist exudes for animals, both real and fantastical, and his commitment to animal welfare and advocacy. As is evident in the artwork he creates for the Metro Toronto Zoo, the B.C. Ministry of the Environment and the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Edwards is dedicated to using his artistic powers and influence to help animals in need.

Sharing in the same spirit of generosity, Edwards and Studio 22 will be donating a significant portion of all watercolour and pencil animal studies exhibit sales to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee who suffered a devastating loss earlier this year when their nearly 25-year old barn, used to house rescued farm animals, was destroyed in a fire. Monies raised will assist Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre with reconstruction efforts and expenses.

Woodrow & Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity

    Opening June 19th, 2018

This unique exhibit of works by award-winning author-illustrator Wallace Edwards will feature a vast selection of preliminary pencils and paintings on paper, which served as the inspiration for his most recent beautifully illustrated wordless picture book Woodrow At Sea. Other artwork on display during the show will include a spectacular collection of watercolour and pencil animal studies by the artist.

Edwards’ illustrations do more than visually captivate the readers; through the vibrant expression of emotions, the artist’s illustrations succeed in capturing the raw humanity and true essence of his characters. The exhibit presents fans, supporters and art aficionados alike the rare opportunity to not only explore the evolution of the artist’s fantastical original book concept of exploration, discovery and conflict, but also own an Edwards original work at a very accessible price.

“Woodrow At Sea was inspired by a large body of drawings of a little elephant in a boat. The drawings came in an unbidden burst of creative energy and seemed to lead one to the other. The original idea for the book was a journey of a lone hero in the vast unknown. I am very pleased with the final published result but also with the opportunity to show the preliminary concept drawings and give a glimpse at the unseen part of the process in the making of this book.” – Wallace Edwards

Edwards is an award-winning author-illustrator who has captured, transformed and inspired the imagination of both children and adults alike. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, his paintings and illustrations are found in public and private collections, books, magazines and on public display in Canada and the United States. Edwards won the 2002 Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature Illustration for his first children’s picture book, Alphabeasts. His third book, Mixed Beasts was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and won the Amelia Frances Howard- Gibbon Award. He currently resides in Yarker, Ontario.

Woodrow and Friends: Sharing the Spirit of Generosity is on exhibit at Studio 22 from Tuesday, June 19 until Saturday, July 14th, 2018.

  • HAUNTED GRAFFITI – New paintings by Lee Stewart

HAUNTED GRAFFITI – New paintings by Lee Stewart

    May 8th to June 9th, 2018

    A HAUNTING REFLECTION IN PAINT

Studio22 Open Gallery is delighted to present HAUNTED GRAFFITI, a collection of new work by Kingston-based artist Lee Stewart.

Large canvases set the scene for this collection of provocative narrative paintings from emerging artist Lee Stewart, demonstrating his cinematic approach to composition, both in content and form. Rarely do such varied subjects come together in a studied and cohesive body of work, and yet Stewart manages to lend his signature ability to consume and distill disparate cultural forms, from classic films and art history to folklore and pop culture, and to imbue them with something akin to reverence.

In isolating his subjects, Stewart presses pause on his active mind and concentrates his auto-didactic artistic skills on executing paintings with minute detail and significant impact. In one of his large scale works, for example, Stewart depicts two deer, captured in a moment of stillness and vulnerability. His attention to minutiae is beautifully on display here, as the viewer begins to notice thumbnail size details emerge. The impact of the work is clear: like a camera zoom, it is a long and slow reveal. It commands the viewers attention and asks that we take the time to contemplate how moments in life reveal themselves to be far more than we initially apprehend, when we allow ourselves to be drawn in.

In another variation on this theme, an intimate portrait of Michael Jordan crying, Stewart references popular culture, employing this snapshot of celebrity in the service of exploring a deeper reality. Here Stewart’s keen awareness of human emotion is on display; calling into question the reduction of a human life to a single moment in time which betrays the truth of their complex nature.

The bright, often fluorescent, colour palettes of Stewart’s work suggest a manner of playfulness, which he juxtaposes with the more serious themes he explores. He is discerning, yet refreshingly able to avoid the trap of hierarchical thinking. Almost nothing escapes his gaze and consideration. A self-portrait by the artist, entitled Auto-Retrato is an amalgamation of Stewart’s own countenance in the form of Diego Valázquez, a painter from the Golden Age of Spanish painting; an auspicious synthesis which suggests a prosperous career for this young, but impressive artist.

  • COLOUR BLAST – Erika Olson

    COLOUR BLAST – Erika Olson

    November 7 to December 16, 2017

    COLOUR BLAST

a collection of new abstract work by Kingston artist Erika Olson

Erika Olson’s new solo exhibition features a return to the large colourful abstracts which marked the early days of her painting career. After more than a dozen years urgently examining the everyday objects of domesticity and producing the sumptuous still lives for which she has become known, Olson’s work has come full circle.

Saturated colour schemes remain a constant for Olson, as does her intuitive sense of balancing shapes. By juxtaposing smooth and jagged lines, her new works feel at once edgy and organic. Here, however, her domestic colour palette gives way to the exotic; Indian Miniatures providing a current muse.

Olson’s re-exploration of abstraction is a gift to the viewer; it’s as if she’s rediscovered some of her most comfortable and beloved old clothes, and by restructuring them, fashioned a tapestry of form and tone.

These large vibrant works are indeed quintessentially modernist in their inspiration and yet still feel current and original. Don’t miss your chance to see the exciting body of work that is COLOUR BLAST.

Erika Olson studied fine art at Queens University and earned her BFA from Concordia University. She has had numerous exhibitions and group shows in Kingston, Toronto, Calgary and the United Kingdom.

COLOUR BLAST; new abstracts by Erika Olson is on exhibit at Studio 22 from Tuesday, November 7 until Saturday December 16, 2017.

  • REMNANTS – Debra Krakow

    REMNANTS – Debra Krakow

    November 7 to December 16, 2017

Remnants: finding beauty in transience and decay

the latest body of work by local artist Debra Krakow

Working from her picturesque Wolfe Island home studio, artist and architect Debra Krakow watches the seasons unfold.  Lush greens give way to the riotous ochres and siennas of autumn, before succumbing to the hush of winter’s mantle of white.  These weathered landscapes, the evidence of time’s passage, inspire Krakow’s layered, and often expansive and abstracted, canvases.

Natural landscapes, sometimes presented as fragments, invite the viewer to look beneath the façade of mere seeing.  They reveal the dignity and subtle structure of memory and perspective.  What lies beyond that which we immediately encounter are the forms of change themselves.  Krakow’s work reminds us that our subjective viewpoints necessarily reflect experience filtered through time and that which we most accurately perceive often demands focused attention and thoughtful exploration.

“I am drawn to these sparse, quiet landscapes with their vestiges of abundance: cornstalks in frozen fields, dead trees in a flooded pond, detritus on a forest floor.  The signs of aging can be equally evocative and beautiful on human-made surfaces — peeling paint on weathered barn board, a rusty metal door, cracked plaster in an abandoned building.  My working method is a natural fit for exploring the way structures and landscapes morph over time.  I work in layers, selectively revealing or obscuring parts of the layers below to create an evocative surface. Just as a landscape or weathered surface bears hints of its evolution, my painted surfaces reveal a complex history of underlying texture and colour.”—Debra Krakow

Debra Krakow was born into a creative family in 1965 and has been a free spirit ever since. Torn between her two loves – art and physics –she decided to study architecture.  She graduated from McGill University where she had the privilege of studying life drawing under artist Gentile Tondino.  She developed her artistic practice through courses in painting, printmaking, sculpture, fibre arts and ceramics.

Her work has been exhibited in her native city of Montreal as well as Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Halifax and New York State.  Her works are fondly displayed in living rooms and offices throughout North America.

Remnants: finding beauty in transience and decay is on exhibit at Studio 22 from Tuesday, November 7 until Saturday December 16, 2017.

  • LOST PORTRAITS – New Works by Keight MacLean

LOST PORTRAITS – New Works by Keight MacLean

Keight MacLean would be the first to admit that there is something perplexing and paradoxical about great art. The challenge as an artist—especially one capable of approaching the latter—is to develop an aesthetic that both celebrates beauty and showcases their expertise, yet still stakes a claim on the radical inventiveness of artistic creation. That is, every artist must find her own unique voice.

For MacLean, finding her voice has coincided with giving voice to forgotten and historically marginalized women. LOST PORTRAITS, her latest body of work, features MacLean’s traditionally inspired portraits, presented with a contemporary twist, such as fluorescent spray paint, re-harvested artists’ mediums and destructive techniques. Driven to explore new materials and apply experimental methods, MacLean is a natural student and calculating risk-taker. Working on surfaces of various sizes affords MacLean the freedom to explore new territory and makes her work accessible to a range of investors.

MacLean’s dedication to her practice is impressive for an emerging artist. She credits her experience under the tutelage of Karen Peperkorn of Kingston’s Creative Arts FOCUS Program with helping to set her on her artistic path. A recent OCAD University graduate and an alumna of the school’s revered Florence Program, located in Florence, Italy, MacLean takes a holistic approach to her practice. She continually seeks out opportunities to establish connections with fellow artists, to broaden her audience, and to cultivate new collectors. Now based in Toronto, she has participated in various art fairs, such as Toronto Outdoor and the Artist’s Project, garnering an extensive following. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally and her work is in collections throughout Canada, the USA, Italy and the UK.

Studio 22 is thrilled to welcome Keight MacLean home and to present LOST PORTRAITS, her first major solo exhibition in Kingston.

LOST PORTRAITS will be on display at Studio 22, located at 320 King Street East, Kingston from September 12-October 28, 2017.

  • THERE – New Acrylic Paintings by Montreal Artist Beverly Zawitkoski

THERE – New Acrylic Paintings by Montreal Artist Beverly Zawitkoski

YES, YOU CAN GET ‘THERE’ FROM HERE!

THERE, New Works by Beverly Zawitkoski will carry you away. The solo exhibition, on display at Studio 22 Open Gallery, highlights the creative practice of self-expression through paint.

Zawitoski takes her inspiration from landscapes, though her abstract canvases bring the viewer on an impassioned journey, which travels far beyond the physical realm. Through abstraction, Zawitkoski explains that her goal is “to create an aesthetic that facilitates the exploration of an unknown place that is at once emotionally familiar and visually suggested.”

The works are a culmination of years of refined technique. Her process reveals the possibilities of paint, which is layered then deconstructed in a series of steps throughout each work: marks, scratches, lineation, additional layers, densely textured areas and blending all build up the surface, sometimes evoking energetic purpose and at other times transcendent tranquility. She searches continually for unfettered, expressive ways of breathing life into paint’s viscosity and colour, requiring multiple trials before achieving the final composition. Every painting gives her insight into the next work, in turn pulling her forward towards a new series. Zawitkoski credits the constant rhythm of self-questioning with the production of these completed paintings.

The resulting works are at once a profound exclamation of intent, focusing our attention on the very nature of existence and the complex and elegant process of creation itself, and a subtle reminder that through exploration, you can arrive somewhere both unexpected and exquisite.

Savour the seduction of subtle colours and gestures in paint; embark on a voyage of personal discovery. Yes, you can get ‘ THERE’ from here!

Beverly Zawitkoski is a Canadian artist living and working in her native Montreal.  Zawitkoski has exhibited in many solo and group shows in Canada and internationally in the USA, across the UK, and in The Czech Republic’s capital of Prague. THERE will be on display at Studio 22, located at 320 King Street East, Kingston from September 12-October 28, 2017.

  •  BABY, BABY DON’T GET HOOKED ON ME – by Cameron Schaefer

BABY, BABY DON’T GET HOOKED ON ME – by Cameron Schaefer

Baby, Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me – by Cameron Schaefer

With a combination of nostalgia and whimsy, Cameron Schaefer takes us on a whirlwind journey through the humourous, the iconic, and the unexpected.

In today’s fast-paced world, it is often the role of the artist to show us how to slow down, to work through ideas, and to make things with our hands. Enter Cameron Schaefer. A Kingston-based author, musician and artist who creates comical compositions, Schaefer invents provocative and contemporary variations on familiar images and themes. His latest exhibition will feature wood panel screen prints and paintings.

The juxtaposition of his process is itself somewhat ironic. Schaefer employs old-fashioned techniques normally used to produce quantities of items, to fabricate his one-of-a-kind works. In so doing, he embraces a rich tradition in contemporary art, beginning with Dadaism, that continues to question the very notion of what constitutes fine art.

With his latest body of work, Baby, Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me, Schaefer marries his unique tongue-in-cheek sense of humour with his acute colour sensibility. The resulting work is at home in any environment, delighting viewers of all ages. Come on, get hooked!

Baby, Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me, by Cameron Schaefer will be on display at Studio 22 from July 11 – August 19.
