    SACRO FIORE

    Sacro Fiore (Sacred Flower)

A Delicate and Contemporary Take On a Venerable and Age- old Art Form

Victor Oriecuia is an accomplished Canadian sculptor. His latest body of work – a collection now 3 years in the making- uses flowers as the central subject. It’s a perfect embodiment of the contradictions of stonework; the delicate form carved out of solid material; movement depicted in an immovable object.

He calls the collection Sacro Fiore, meaning simply: Sacred Flower, in Italian. Sacro Fiore, is a 15 piece collection composed of 11 new works made from 13 different marbles and 5 different metals. Oriecuia’s contemporary take on an age-old art form is what sets this collection apart.

    Artist Statement

“My concepts take months or years to bring to fruition, without shortcuts or compromises. I chose flowers as a general theme for my latest collection of work due to their contrasting nature with stone. The fleeting nature of flowers is now replaced with immortality and permanence in stone. I am also drawn to the universal communication and metaphors that flowers provide. My work explores universal communication and metaphors of emotional seduction such as love, power, lust, and recognition. Unlike most flowers, my sculptures invite the observer to touch their delicate surfaces, and reinforce an emotional connection through the remaining senses.

Floral inspirations also allow me to explore and exhibit the limitations and perceptions of marble sculpture. I strive to achieve warmth, vibrancy, and vulnerability- characteristics not commonly associated with this dense and unforgiving material. With these sculptures, I created hallowed unions between stone, metal, and wood. These sacred elements, combined and joined in various ways, lure the viewer into the center of each sculpture, where true beauty awaits.”

    Victor Oriecuia

Victor Oriecuia, a Kingston-based stone sculptor with 20 years experience, is passionate about pursuing and preserving old-world sculpting traditions. Victor’s hand carved sculptures push the perceptions and limitations of marble, onyx, and other hard stones. He is drawn to the intimate nature and devotion required to render sculptures, and the unlimited potential and beauty of natural stone. Victor’s exquisite sculptures engage viewers with an artform that has remained virtually unchanged throughout human history.

CAN YOU GIFT A LOVE OF ART?

The act of giving is engrained in many cultures – ritualized for a myriad of purposes – as rite, as reward, as gratitude.  A gift is many things.  It is not always of a physical nature, and a physical offering is not always the real gift. A pair of track shoes to the aspiring runner is a gift of opportunity.  A book to a child is a gift of an expanded mind.

It is natural that we like to share the things we value.  In a world of ever expanding stuff, it is more important than ever that we find value in the things we choose to share.  We at Studio22 hold dear the idea that art is a gift. It elevates our state of mind and gives texture and colour to our imaginations.  In the words of Ezra Pound,

Beauty in art reminds one what is worth while, I am not now speaking of shams.  I mean beauty, not slither, not sentimentalizing about beauty, not telling people that beauty is the proper and respectable thing.  I mean beauty.  You don’t argue about an April wind, you feel bucked up when you meet it.  You feel bucked up when you come across a swift moving thought in Plato or on a fine line in a statue.

In acknowledgement of the gift-giving season, Studio22 is proud to present FUEL FOR HIBERNATION– an exhibit of art, all under $500, that ignites our thoughts to help us while away the dark hours of winter.  We invite you to share your love of art with those you love. Consider gifting a love of art.  We all deserve to feel bucked up.

***As well as this exhibit of art under $500, the gallery offers customized gift certificates – purchasable directly from our online store.

    Enigma Variations

The first series depicts young women in party dresses, sitting alone in corners, confronting the viewer face on. The second series depicting female circus performers was inspired by the family history of the artist’s dear friend, who recently discovered he’d descended from generations of famous British clowns and Vaudeville actors.

  • Fluid Forms ~ Duerst & Loomit

Fluid Forms ~ Duerst & Loomit

    s22001

Fluid Forms break through the fourth wall.

Studio 22 Open Gallery is thrilled to present Fluid Forms, new work by artist Stefan Duerst.  The dynamic forms of Stefan Duerst’s steel sculptures emerge as the fluid embodiment of his deeply creative essence.  The exhibition will feature new works created exclusively by Duerst as well as new collaborative pieces by Duerst and German graffiti artist  Loomit.

The art of collaboration requires a curious nature, a strong sense of experimentalism and an abundance of trust.  To find a kindred spirit, especially in the art world, which can often be quite isolating, creates a unique opportunity for openness, artistic development and inspiration.  This year Duerst, who is no stranger to collaboration, invited the graffiti artist Loomit to work with him on a new series of steel sculptures.  After heating, bending and shaping the steel into his characteristically sensuous and suggestive abstract shapes, Duerst entrusted them to Loomit, who transformed the raw steel finish with his mastery of spray painting.  For those who are familiar with Duerst’s work, there are signature favourites;  the ribbon-like Soul Gate and the provocative Kommunikation series, to name a few.  Yet the results of this artistic collaboration are astonishingly new.

Two early pieces were created in Duerst’s Godfrey studio and shipped to Munich, Germany where Loomit applied his finishing touch.  The rest of the collaboration took place during an exceptional week in September, 2016 which Loomit spent in residence at Duerst’s Studio at Godfrey Sculpture Park.  No doubt, like Duerst himself, Loomit was inspired by the incredible natural beauty of the Canadian landscape.  The juxtaposition of graffiti art applied to three-dimensional sculpture is akin to the very notion of using a material as industrial as steel in shapes as fluid as fabric.

German-born Stefan Duerst has been experimenting with metal since 1992, first as a blacksmith and ultimately as as an abstract sculpture artist.  He emigrated to Canada in 2002, inspired by the wilderness of the Canadian Shield, where he lives, creates, and inspires others on the 60 acre property which he has developed into Godfrey Sculpture Park.  Munich-based Loomit has been working in the medium of spray paint since 1983, combining creative lettering and imagery, and establishing himself as an internationally recognized graffiti artist for his large wall productions.

FLUID FORMS will be on display from November 15 – December 23.

Gallery Hours:  Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Thursdays until 8 pm, and Friday Evenings until 10 pm.

    Stefan Duerst – Liquid Steel

    New Metal Sculptural Works

    July 19th to August 24th, 2014

Stefan Duerst is a creator whose mind, body, spirit and sculptural works can all be viewed through the concept of Liquid Steel.  There is fluidity and strength aplenty.

Stefan’s metal works are suitable for indoor or outdoor display.  Some are free standing; some hang on a wall.  Some of his works are so large that they will not fit in our gallery.  This has given us the opportunity to do something we have long wanted to do – exhibit artwork in Market Square.  For the evening of Saturday July 19th, we will be exhibiting Stefan’s larger works in historic Market Square concurrent to opening his ‘indoor’ exhibit at Studio22 (overlooking the square) between 8 and 10:30 pm.  The outdoor exhibit is open to the public.

    Artist Statement:

Since moving to Canada over 18 years ago, I have been collecting tools and equipment that fill my 1800 sq ft studio, enabling me to produce high quality work in a variety of sizes for the 60 acres sculpture garden on my property near Godfrey, ON.

I am drawn to the inherent qualities of steel; the paradox of its structural integrity and nearly unlimited malleability. Heating this metal in my forges allows me to shape it by handheld hammer, anvil, power hammer and bending fork. I fabricate the pieces without the help of an apprentice, which often pushes me to my physical limits and thus creates a deep, meditative connection with my work.

Important to my work is the Canadian shield; the natural environment surrounding my house and studio provide an endless source of inspiration to me. I bring to these scenes of nature a sensibility inspired by my European background, especially the Bauhaus period and the metal sculpture movement in the 60’s, as well as Art Nouveau. These influences are evidenced by the combination of a strict geometry in dialogue with flowing, organic lines.
Also integral to these works is the play between space/non-space, minimalism, archaic forms, and the properties of the material itself. The surface treatment of my work ranges from raw steel to bright industrial paint, depending on the overall emotion of the piece.
